Tokai forest, a firm favourite with the locals offers you the chance to escape the city and ride through almost endless Pine forests. The adventurous can race to the mast or simply ride down the many jeeptrack or single track sections of the plantation. Tokai forest is a rare gem in a major city and riders can start at the Silvermine Nature reserve and work their way through awesome downhill sections that will leave you wanting more.
Jonkershoek near the university town of Stellenbosch, which is arguably the wine capital of South Africa needs no introduction. On arrival you are presented with a winding tarred road deep into a valley with steep mountains on each side. The lush green forest is at its best in early Spring, after the Winter rainy season, and offers challenging singletrack and tricky descents.
The Garden Route is one of the top tourism destinations in South Africa and boasts not only a Big 5 Game reserve but probably the holy grail of mountain biking in the region. The famed Knysna forest of Harkerville presents you with many options through its colourful route descriptions and many challenges, especially when wet!
The Karoo is often overlooked as a destination for mountain biking but it has truly the best terrain to ride. It offers an array of challenges with rocky climbs, flowing contour paths, unending climbs and heart stopping technical descents. Famous races like the Attekwas extreme mountain bike challenge and the Karoo2Coast have made this area a must ride option.
The Swartberge and Outeniqua mountains are formidable but wondrous to conquer. Ride into Die Hel (the hell) a small town in the area and experience complete desolation.
Why not include the Ceres winelands area in your itinerary? This hidden gem was chosen as the route for the 2010 Cape Epic, an area not well known as a riding mecca, but a diamond in the making. The terrain and scenery is quite spectacular and vastly different from the famous Stellenbosch winelands, offering variety and challenges. One of the legends of mountain biking in the area, Kurt von Keiserlink once commented that: “one can ride here everyday without having to ride the same route twice!” The area is well known for hot summer days and fine fruit farming. Cycle through the orchards and meander through the valleys and discover this secret garden.
Grabouw is situated high in a mountainous valley not far from Cape Town. The landscape is dominated by forest and plantations. The area offers you fast flowing singletrack and great technical riding amidst apple orchards andindigenous fynbos. While there, one can stop off and enjoy some of the local fruit and beautiful landscape as this area forms part of the Cape Floral Kingdom with its heart just a few kilometres away in Kogelberg.
Delvera, Stellenbosch a purpose built mountain biking heaven hidden between the famous winelands of the area. This patch of earth designed and operated by local hero, Meurant Botha offers a great many challenges. The riding is so diverse and amazing you will want to ride it over and over again. The entrance and restaurant overlooks the rest of the property towards Cape Town with Table Mountain in the background. A stunning sunset awaits you if you hang around till then.
The Cape West Coast is well known for it’s lobster and laid back lifestyle.

In close proximity is the Cedarberg, a constrast to the sparse vegetation of the west coast is an oasis in an otherwise dry landscape. Close to the town of Clanwilliam it offers fantastic mountain biking, singletrack abound and opportunity for many riders to test their mettle against Mother Nature. Gravity rules when going downhill on testing descents but could prove too much for some on the way back up. At least the natural beauty will more than make up for the ascents.
